Congress Should Consider a Bipartisan Censure for the sake of the Constitution, and the Country

I would rather have ½ or even a 1/3rd of Congressional Republicans condemning this behavior on a “lesser” censure (reprimand) than get an actual impeachment that is only supported by Democrats because Congress, the Constitution, and the soul of the country are at stake.
The worst thing about this impeachment fight is that about half of the Congress is telling the American people that Trump’s behavior is ok. That is the lasting damage.
Eroding public appreciation for ethics and truthfulness is the real damage. While many Republican pundits and former elected officials, those up for re-election last fall are especially willing to distort reality.
I understand why so many voters wanted a successful outsider in the White House, but I implore Trump supporters to think about the Constitution, and what a future Democratic President might do if we say this is ok.
most Americans will be offended that Congressional Republicans are setting a precedent that the President could completely ignore Congressional subpoenas and investigations, and use the Powers of the Office to secretly help their re-election. Where will that take us in 10 years when a President we’ve never heard of, elected in 2028 or 2032 decides to ignore Congress.
Democrats should consider the long term
benefit to the Country of a bi-partisan censure for the same reason.
Hopefully most Americans will find their claim that Trump was “just so concerned about corruption generally” as laughable and silly as I do. Hopefully many moderates will be offended by their stretch of the truth.
Hopefully most Americans will learn that Trump only released the aid to Ukraine after his scheme was exposed in the media, and see through their shame argument that
But I would encourage the Democratic Caucus to be open to a censure motion if Republicans decide that would vote to condemn this abuse of power.
I understand the desire so many Republicans and independents had wanting an outsider, an apparently successful business man not beholden to DC, to come in and shake things up in to the federal government.
I understand the anger many voters felt over the bi-partisan consensus to let let American factories move to Mexico or oversees which decimated hundreds of small towns and the lives of millions of Americans across the country.
I understand how much pride they felt when a guy who finally spoke to them, and spoke nationally what they had been saying for years, won the white house, and how much pride they may feel because the Stock Market, Unemployment, and other economic indicators are doing so well, and that someone is finally pushing China on trade.
I understand how hard it is to give up on someone you’ve been supporting, but I implore Republicans and Independents to think about the Country and the Constitution.
I implore them to think about our children, and how much those tweets “which I don’t approve of” are influencing an entire generation. But more importantly Congress and Trump are together teaching them that you can cheat and its o.k. You can use the power of the government to cheat, and that’s ok.
Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or independent, please call your member of Congress and ask them to consider this idea and explain to them why you support it.
